Membrane switch, known as tact keyboard & switch, membrane keyboard & keypad, is an electrical switch for turning a circuit on and off. It is a sealed tactile switch made by laminating multiple layers of flexible film (PET/PC). It conducts when pressed and springs back to disconnect when released.

Membrane switch, from the top surface to the bottom layer, generally is composed of the following 6 layers:
Graphic Overlay
It is the decorative panel layer, usually made of PET or PC film, about 0.125–0.25 mm thick. The panel is used for displaying text, icons, windows, and the overall appearance, while also protecting the internal circuitry.
Overlay Adhesive
It combines the graphic overlay layer with the bottom layers.
Metal Dome Retainer
It is used to fix metal domes in position and prevent them from moving. The common material is PET adhesive, with openings at the positions corresponding to the domes.
Spacer Adhesive
This layer keeps the upper and lower circuits physically separated and ensuring the buttons remain non-conductive when they are not pressed. The material is 0.05~0.2 mm thick PET double-sides adhesive, with through holes at each button position.
Metal Dome
It plays an important role to provide tactile feedback. When pressed, it produces a crisp "click" sound and a tactile snap, and closes the circuit.
Circuit
It is the core conductive layer of membrane switch. It is usually a PET film screen-printed with conductive silver paste or carbon paste. It also can be the Copper Flex Circuit (FPC), or PCB.
Rear Adhesive
The adhesive is applied to the bottom layer of membrane keyboard. It combines the membrane switch with the device housing or PCB.
