Membrane switch, known as tact keyboard & switch, membrane keyboard & keypad, is an electrical switch for turning a circuit on and off. Membrane switch is made of soft materials, like silicone rubber, PC, PVC, PET, FPC, double-sided adhesive, etc.

Membrane switch, known as tact keyboard & switch, membrane keyboard & keypad, is an electrical switch for turning a circuit on and off. Membrane switch is made of soft materials, like silicone rubber, PC, PVC, PET, FPC, double-sided adhesive, etc. Membrane switch differs from mechanical switch, which is usually made of copper and plastic parts. Membrane switch is a circuit printed on PET or ITO. The ink used for screen printing is usually copper / silver / graphite filled and therefore it is conductive.
 
Membrane switches can be thought of as a category of interface utilities alongside touch screens, plastic keyboards, toggle switches and many other kinds of control systems. Interface utilities can be as simple as tactile switches for controlling lighting, and they can be as complicated as membrane keyboards and switch panels for using computers.
 
Classic applications of membrane switches include microwave oven panel, air conditioner control panel, TV remote control etc. Tactile feedback of keys can be provided by embossing the top PET layer or embedding metal snap domes, polyester domes or forming the graphic layer.
 
The benefits of membrane switches include ease of cleaning, good sealing ability & conductivity, small size, light weight, low cost, long life cycle, etc.

Membrane Switch-basic structure and materials
Membrane Switch consists of overlay, top adhesive, top circuit, spacer, floor circuit and adhesive.

1. Overlay
Some exquisite design and texts are silk screen printed on transparent materials (PET, PC, etc). The overlay plays a important role in identify and keyboard so the material must equip with high transparency, ink adhesion and elasticity.
 
2. Top Adhesive
Top Adhesive connects overlay with circuit closely, excellent sealing and connecting result. Its thickness is between 0.05-0.15mm, with high adhesive and anti-aging. During manufacturing, dedicated double-sided adhesives in membrane switch are more often chosen. However, some membrane switch are required to be waterproof and heat-resistant. Therefore materials adoption varies in different requirement.
 
3. Circuit
A circuit is printed on PET and copper / silver / graphite was filled by silk screen printing. Therefore it is conductive. Generally, the thickness is 0.05-0.175mm. 0.125mm PET is common.
 
4. Spacer
 Spacer lies between top circuit and floor circuit circuit, playing a role of sealing and connecting. PET Double-sided adhesive is common material and its sickness is between 0.05-0.2mm. During material adoption, the thickness of whole product, insulativity, the handle of keyboard and sealing should be consideration.
 
5. Adhesive
 Adhesive adoption is closely related to which kind of material stick with membrane switch. Common double-sided adhesive, 3M glue, waterproof glue, etc.
