Rubber dome is rubber dome switch used in membrane keyboards, which is the most common switch technology in keyboards.
Rubber dome are made from silicone rubber material by compression molding or liquid silicone injection molding.Rubber dome are compressed to perfection to create a crisp tactile feeling of keyboard.There are carbon pill or conductive ink printing under rubber dome, that are pushed dome to complete a circuit.Rubber dome is flexible, small and soft.
Rubber dome acts as a switch inside the membrane keyboard, providing resistance and tactile feedback.It is a return spring for each key.So the rubber dome actuation force is very important.
Rubber dome keyboards are typed usually.So the actuation force of the rubber dome keyboard should be low.It is about 40-90g+/-10g.
How to get a light actuation force rubber dome?
There are some factors that effect the rubber dome actuation force:
1. Key webbing thickness.The thicker key webbing, the greater actuation force.
2. Rubber dome travel.The shorter travel, the lower actuation force.
3. Silicone rubber material rebound resilience and hardness.The quality of the material and the resilience of the rubber dome directly affect the tactile feeling.If the resilience of the rubber dome is poor, the rubber dome is not easy to bounce back, easy to cause the rubber dome stuck.
4. Weight of each rubber dome.To achieve standard actuation force, the weight of each rubber dome has to be accurately calculated.
4. High precision mold.Because the rubber dome actuation force should be low and light, the mold steel quality is also very important. Better mold steel material, higher precision rubber dome.It not only effect the actuation force but also in rubber dome dimension.
Rubber dome we produced is used in laptop wireless keyboard which requires low and light actuation force, 65+/-5g.So we did a lot of experiments to achieve the low actuation force:
First, we choose the high quality silicone rubber material.It must be high-tensile and good rebound resilience.So we choose ShinEtsu silicone material.
Rubber dome actuation force tolerance is very strict,+/-5g.Actually, it is difficult to achieve by compression molding.In order to meet this tolerance, we improve every cavity of the rubber dome mold by manual.Finally, we control the rubber dome tolerance at +/-5g.
Very small almost no rubber dome burr.In order to avoid excessive burrs, we need to accurately control the weight of each rubber dome during processing.If the material is too much, it will cause excessive burrs.And we use clamp to remove the rubber dome burr so as to avoid big burr.Because the big burr will cause the rubber dome cannot bond well with membrane keyboard.
